Please Note: This program is now extended to be a Two Month Karma Yoga Program during this time of COVID-19 precautions. Entry will begin with an isolation period while you learn more about the Ashram before fully joining the community. Most other details as outlined below apply, except that the time period is two months rather than one.

Take this opportunity to experience yoga and work in a truly transformative way! Founded on the principle of service, the Ashram is a living example of a generosity-based intergenerational community. Karma Yoga is the practice of selfless service/volunteering and is an essential part of life at Yasodhara Ashram.

We especially welcome young adults (18-30). Whether you are on a gap year, taking time out to consider next steps, or wanting to expand awareness of your spiritual path, this program can help. Through learning to understand symbolism, the power of speech and mind, and through exploring your attitude to work and service, you can create a firm foundation for your future.

The program is also open to those of all ages.

The OM program can be a steppingstone to longer-term residential stays ranging from three months to two years or longer. See Pathways for Living & Serving in the Ashram Community for more information.

Through Karma Yoga I have found a new way of learning and working. It’s not about recognition; it’s about offering my work based on what I can do and what I know, within an environment of abundance and support. Ametisse Gover-Chamlou

The One-Month (OM) Program is for people who want to take time away from their daily lives to learn more about themselves and their life choices. The program focuses on Karma Yoga —the yoga of action and selfless service/volunteering while introducing participants to the main Yasodhara Yoga practices such as Mantra, Hatha, Dreams and Kundalini Yoga — tools that can help expand awareness. The program helps you deepen self-knowledge, integrate as a valued working member of the community and take away a life-changing experience.

Each day:

  • starts with a one-hour Hatha Yoga class
  • ends with Satsang, a community gathering of devotion/meditation.

Week 1 includes:

  • orientation
  • training & work in different areas
  • workshops introducing practices and self-development processes
  • reflection day

Weeks 2-4:

  • 5.5 days of full-time Karma Yoga (working in different areas)
  • daily reflection breaks including writing/sharing in small groups
  • weekly evening class
  • weekly half-day workshop
  • weekly reflection day
  • final week includes review and planning as well as exit interviews

Based on six-eight hours of Karma Yoga daily, depending on the day; elders (60 and over) can request fewer hours.

  • library; bookstore; meditation rooms; beach and forest walks

Participants are also welcome to attend lunch-hour activities (such as sacred dance/music or learning sessions on various topics), as well as special events. Each participant is assigned an Ashram contact person to help with ongoing questions.

No Fee. Although there is no fee, you will be investing your time and energy, and your intentions, in the community. Shared accommodation, meals and workshops included. We welcome any financial contribution participants can offer towards supporting the program.

This program is funded by donations made to the Ashram’s Learning and Outreach fund. Donations of any size, made in a spirit of generosity, are welcome. Even a small donation reflects your desire to help someone else have the same opportunity, and can be made at any time.

Minimum two month commitment required.

2020: Variable, depending on your availability.

It’s neat to see how the work as a karma yogi – repairs and maintenance – has evolved into my current construction work. I continue to bring the teachings into my life as much as I can and I look forward to the next time I will be able to visit the Ashram.
